HONE District Heating System

This installation is a custom designed system, in a multi module format of 4 heat engines for high performance. This heat pump district main, (heat pumps removed and converted back to gas before HONE), heats underfloor and radiator based systems 12 months of the year in a medical environment. The HONE system uses the district heating main as storage up to 90C so no additional storage was needed making the project a straightforward installation. This heating main can continue to operate into hours of darkness delivering heating energy to the buildings. The inside air temp requirement is 25C due to the medical nature of the site. Gas boilers provide a backup at certain times of the year.

What HONE system has been installed here?

The system installed is a custom commercial HONE Heating system constructed into 4 heating nano-engines.  As with all HONE systems, it was designed completely based on the input site survey and to integrate with the existing systems. Integrating with existing commercial district heating mains is straight forward as HONE delivers such high temperatures.

What was the motivation for the NHS to do the upgrade?

Energy costs savings and reduction of CO2 to avoid penalties.

Where there any challenges with this installation?

The biggest challenge in this type of installation would be expected to be the fact that there can be zero interruption to existing site services. This is one of the main advantages of a HONE system, full installation can be achieved with no impact of existing services.

What are the savings expected?

This system was installed in a heavily metered hospital site and the immediate results were a reduction of 80% in gas consumption.
